Our Story

Born from a Community Need

NASSAL was founded in response to a stark reality: Liberia has no neurologists, and stroke survivors — increasingly younger in Africa than anywhere else in the world — were being left without support, education, or hope.

Our founders, themselves touched by the impact of stroke in their communities, came together with a shared conviction: that community-based support, peer education, and advocacy could save lives and restore dignity to survivors even in the absence of formal neurological care.

Registered as a not-for-profit organization in Montserrado County, Liberia, NASSAL has grown from a small circle of committed volunteers into a recognized organization reaching hundreds of survivors and thousands of community members through our programs.

Our work is grounded in the belief that every stroke survivor deserves awareness, support, and the opportunity to recover with dignity — regardless of geography or resources.

Our Mission

What We Do

To support stroke survivors in Liberia through awareness, civic education, counseling, community outreach, and advocacy — fostering healing, resilience, and improved quality of life for survivors and their families across all communities.

Our Vision

Where We're Headed

A Liberia where every stroke survivor has access to timely support, informed communities actively prevent stroke, and national healthcare systems prioritize neurological care — ensuring no survivor faces their recovery journey alone.

Core Values

What We Stand For

Eight principles guide everything NASSAL does — from individual survivor support to national advocacy.

Compassion

We lead with empathy, meeting survivors and families where they are with kindness and genuine care.

Hope

We believe recovery is possible and work to cultivate hope in every survivor, caregiver, and community we serve.

Resilience

We celebrate the strength of survivors and build programs that reinforce the human capacity to overcome.

Education

We empower through knowledge, ensuring communities have the health literacy to prevent and respond to stroke.

Advocacy

We speak up for survivors at every level — community, civic, and governmental — to drive systemic change.

Community Support

We believe in the power of community and create networks of support that sustain survivors beyond our programs.

Dignity

We honor the inherent dignity of every person, ensuring our programs affirm worth, respect, and self-determination.

Accountability

We hold ourselves accountable to survivors, partners, and communities — transparent in our work and impact.

Why We Exist

The Gap We're Here to Fill

NASSAL was created because the healthcare system alone cannot meet the needs of stroke survivors in Liberia. We exist to bridge that gap.

01

No Neurologists in Liberia

Liberia has zero practicing neurologists. Stroke survivors have no specialist to turn to — making community-based support the only viable pathway to care.

02

Stroke Strikes Earlier in Africa

The mean age of stroke in Africa is 57 — nine years younger than in high-income countries. Young adults and breadwinners are disproportionately affected.

03

Critical Treatment Window Often Missed

Most Liberian stroke patients arrive outside the critical 4.5-hour treatment window due to lack of awareness about stroke symptoms and urgency.

04

Rehabilitation Services Are Scarce

Physical, occupational, and speech therapy are largely unavailable. NASSAL fills this gap with guidance, caregiver training, and peer support networks.
